I used Jaaxy to search for Persian cats for example. As you can see there are 10512 searches each month, but there are also 126 competing sites, so you have a lot of competition (although not as much as you would have for cats).
However, if you narrow it down to grooming Persian cats, you only have 15 competing sites targeting that keyword, and the 96 tells you that it will be easier to rank for.
Now if I type in grooming Persian cats, this is the list I get back.
As you can see, the search volumes in the first column are not great, but looking at the third column you can see that there are fewer competing sites, and Jaaxy rates these (mostly) as good keywords to target. So now you have a list of articles you can write for your blog, all to do with cat grooming or Persian cat grooming. You are far more likely to get visits to your site using these keywords than using the more generic ones.
So when you are searching for a profitable niche, it is always better to break your primary niche down and down again if you have to in order to find which topic is going to make you the most profit.
Even if you pick a popular niche like weight loss, you can still narrow it down and target a certain demographic, for example, ladies over fifty who want to lose belly fat, or best diets for people in their 60s.

For instance, instead of a niche revolving around losing weight, you could rather focus on a smaller niche market, like losing weight if you are over 70, or how to get fit if you have sore knees, etc. So in this way you won’t be competing against a huge niche, but rather one you can specialise in that caters to a certain segment of the market place.
