How To Come Up With A Blog Name

how to come up with a blog name

For most people who want to start a blog to make some extra money, how to come up with a blog name or an idea for your blog is often a huge stumbling block when it comes to getting your website going.

Most of us will already know what we would like to blog about deep down, and the good news is that you can basically blog about anything under the sun, but the trick is to drill down and find something that is more specific within the niche that you want to enter.

It is no use blogging about weight loss in general for instance, as that is way to competitive. Rather drill down and blog about how to lose weight for fifty year olds, or how to lose weight on the ……diet, or even exercises for men that help them loose weight. You get my drift?

How to come up with a blog name

The best thing to do is start small when it comes to coming up with a great topic for your blog.

Start by opening up a document on your lap top or even grabbing a note pad and list some ideas that come to mind.

How To Come Up With A Blog Name

Here are the questions that you need to ask yourself:

Question 1 – What Do You Love?

Ask yourself what you are passionate about. What do you love doing or researching. It could be anything from animals to jewellery to fashion to saving the planet. But make it a list about what you simply can’t live a life without.

Question 2 – What Do You Know A Lot About?

This could be anything. Maybe you know a lot about yoga, or you do ballet. You could even list your hobbies that you are vested in at the moment. Think about your career and what you have learned through your work and how you could apply that to a blog.

Question 3 – What Advice Or Help Do You Give People?

Think about what advice people ask you about. Maybe they trust you on hair advice or relationship advice? This could mean that the advice you offer is good and this will give you the confidence you need to get your idea off of the ground.

Question 4 – What Do People Compliment You On The Most?

If people are noticing something about you and complimenting you on it, then you already have something that you can blog about, as you know that this works for you. This could be something that could be your big break. Maybe people love your shoes, or the way you do your nails. These could all be great topics for a blog as you are already doing something right.

Try sending out an email to your friends and tell them you are thinking of starting a blog and let them make suggestions for you, as you may get something from them you may have never thought about. Ask them to tell you what sort of topics they think will suit you.

Research The Competition

The next part  of how to come up with a blog name is to research the competition that you will be up against should you start a blog in a specific niche.

Now you need to do some spying on your competitors. Google the top blogs in your ideas list and see what they have done or what they are doing that makes them so popular. What type of content are they creating, video’s or articles? Are the posts long or short? Look how many comments they get from their audience. Is the blog generic, for example about shoes, or specific for example it is only about luxury shoes?

Now look and see if there is a gap. In other words, what are bloggers not talking about in your related searches. Maybe they are talking a lot about luxury shoes, but there is nothing on high fashion boots. Finding that gap is a great way to get yourself noticed in the crowd, as you will be talking about something that nobody else is.

So what are other bloggers not talking about in your space and what can you bring to the table that is new and different?

You also have to make sure that people are interested in the ‘gap’ that you find and that the topic is not too obscure.

If you can’t find a gap, ask yourself how you can make the topic better. You need to keep in mind that you want to build a relationship with your audience that keeps your blog memorable and different for your readers. Offer your audience your unique take on things. So you need to think of ways to present your content in a more unique and exciting way.

Wrapping It Up!

So remember you don’t need a brand new shiny idea when it comes to how to come up with a blog name or idea for your blog. Instead find a gap or a way to do it better. If you have a topic you are passionate about, this will be easy.

So you need to find a good sub niche within a larger niche. So if you want to blog about horses for example, this is very generic. Rather narrow it down to a specific breed or maybe a specific horse product you know a lot about. Your goal is to become known about that specific thing that you are writing about.

Most companies start off small with a narrow focus in the beginning so that people know who to go to. So don’t try to sell everything and anything, but rather one specific thing in the beginning.

There is a lot of power to being specific about what you do, especially in the beginning until you get a following. You can always branch out later on.

Focus on specific topic that will appeal to a specific audience, and you will gain some super fans from that group of people looking for information on that topic.
