What is a Blog
A blog is very much like an online diary. It can be written by one person or by numerous people.
A blog is normally written on a website in chronological order but is often displayed in reverse order with the last post written at the top.
The word ‘blog’ is a relatively new word and originally came from the word ‘weblog’ originating in about 1995. Jorn Barger used the word weblog and then broke it into two words – we blog – on his website as a joke.
Here are some more fun acronyms:
|BLOG||Better Listings on Google|
|BLOG||Buy Locally Owned Group (Canada)|
|BLOG||Big Load of Gossip|
In the early days of blogging, bloggers called themselves journalers, diarists, or even exhibitionists. An article or comment written on a blog is called a post, blog post or an entry. Old blogs on a topic are sometimes referred to as ‘archives’ and may be kept on a different page or pages that are accessed via a hyperlink. There are sometimes a variety of hyperlinks – like the index of a book and they are found on the right or left-hand side of the blogging page.
When many people interact using a blog, they are usually discussing a particular topic of interest to them. Thus, if someone wants to know what’s the best paper to buy for his painting, he can search the net, add a comment to a blog and others will respond about their experiences on what worked and what didn’t.
What Is A Blog Used For?
If you are wondering what is a blog used for, blogs are actually an ideal space for finding out what other people’s experiences have been with just about anything you can think of. The beauty of blogging is that people who have the same interests can all come together and discuss it, thus getting to know each other at the same time within a safe space.
Blogs make use of both text and images, but some blogs focus on photos (photoblog) art (art blog), videos (vlog) and audio, which could be either podcasting or MP3.
Blogs can be long or short, but those that are extremely short are referred to as micro-blogging. Blogs are usually updated frequently and the technology used today allows people who know very little about it to become bloggers with ease.
So what is a blog used for? A blog could be used for anything and here are just a few ideas:
- A personal diary.
- As a porthole to your local business.
- To advertise your local business.
- To make money off of by either selling advertising or doing recommending other people’s products.

- To share your passions, interests or opinions with the world.
A blog can be either private, or you can opt to share it with the world. I think that everybody should have a blog.
