What is a Blog?

A blog is very much like an online diary. It can be written by one person or by numerous people.

A blog is normally written on a website in chronological order but is often displayed in reverse order with the last post written at the top.

The word ‘blog’ is relatively new and originally came from the word ‘weblog’ originating in about 1995. Jorn Barger used the word weblog and then broke it into two words – we blog – on his website as a joke.

Here are some more fun acronyms:

Acronym Definition
BLOG Web Log
BLOG Better Listings on Google
BLOG Buy Locally Owned Group (Canada)
BLOG Big Load of Gossip

With over 33 million blogs in the US alone, you can find blogs about every subject out there, from home renovation to baking to local business marketing strategies. Once you’ve established a community of readers, the possibilities are truly endless.

The History Behind Blogging

In the early days of blogging, bloggers called themselves journalers, diarists, or even exhibitionists. An article or comment written on a blog is called a post, blog post, or an entry. Old blogs on a topic are sometimes referred to as ‘archives’ and may be kept on a different page or pages that are accessed via a hyperlink. There are sometimes a variety of hyperlinks – like the index of a book and they are found on the right or left-hand side of the blogging page.

Generally, it is understood that a blog is a website containing a writer or a group of writers’ experiences, opinions, and observations. A blog will normally have images and links on it to other websites.

When many people interact using a blog, they are usually discussing a particular topic of interest to them. Thus, if someone wants to know what’s the best paper to buy for his painting, he can search the net, add a comment to a blog and others will respond about their experiences on what worked and what didn’t.
