My Scribie Review
What is Scribie and what do they do?
Scribie is an online company that offers transcription services.
In other words, you can send in a podcast and ask for it to be typed out for you. These services start at $0.10 per minute.
If on the other hand, you would like to be a transcriber for them and get paid, you can do quite well for yourself over time transcribing various broadcasts.
How Do I Get Started As A Transcriber And Make Money?
Once you get onto their webpage, all you need to do is sign up as a transcriber.
You can do this on a part-time or full-time basis, as long as Scribie has work available.
The work you need to do is to listen to audio files and type them as accurately as possible.
Obviously, it will help if you can type at a reasonable speed.
When you sign up as a transcriber, you will need to do a test and get certified by listening to audio and sending your typing in. The test is quite difficult and your listening and patience skills are tested to the extreme.
Once you have been certified you will get paid for the files you transcribe on an audio hour basis.
For each submission, you will be credited for the appropriate dollar amount. You can transfer your earnings at any time into your PayPal account. There are no monthly commitments or minimum withdrawal limits, but payments are only done once a day. Also, there is a 2% charge if you ask for a payout of less than $30.
So whether you have experience as a transcriptionist or you want to gain valuable experience for your CV, then I urge you to give Scribie a try.
If you are uncertain that you can do this work, you can click on the practice tab and try some transcribing of your own from their practice audios and see for yourself what the difficulty will be like for you.
I tried a couple of these, and I found some of the accents difficult to understand.
What Do You Need To Be A Good Transcriber?
There are a few qualities that Scribie is looking for in its applicants:
- The ability to interpret conversations.
- Good command of the English Language.
- A computer with a good internet connection.
- The ability to correct mistakes and apply context.
- Headphones or a headset will help.
With Scribie, you will also need to have a verified PayPal account and the latest version of Firefox or Chrome web browser. They do mention Safari too, but when I tried they asked me to download Chrome.
At the time of writing this post, Scribie was not accepting residents from California or the US.
How Much Money Can I Make As A Transcriber For Scribie?
Scribie pays from $5 to $25 per audio hour. So note that this is the amount of time the audio goes for, not the amount of time that you take to work on the transcription.
The payment for a 6-minute file therefore can be anything from $0.5 to $2.
So the better your listening skills and the faster you can type, the more money you will be able to make in a shorter period of time.
They also pay a bonus of $5 per month for every three hours completed in the month. This is paid out on the first of every month.
There is no restriction on the number of files you can submit each day. Therefore the bonus amount depends solely on your ability. Also since the transcription/review files are always 6 minutes or shorter, you can select files whenever you have some spare time on hand.
The files are given out on a first come first serve basis, and you will need to try and complete the 6-minute file in less than two hours and send it back.
Is There An Affiliate Program?
You can increase your earnings further by referring other transcribers and/or customers to Scribie.
Scribie will pay a 5% affiliate commission to you for each transcript order placed by a referred customer.
For referred transcribers, you will get 2.5% referral commission on their direct earnings.
Anyone who joins as either a transcriber or asks for a transcript through your affiliate link will automatically be marked as your referral.
Can I Get Graded Or Promoted?
Scribie has a grading system that tracks your performance. You can get anything from an A-plus to a D (poor). These will be based on how many mistakes are found in your submission. It is important to try and maintain a good grade, as you can get promoted or demoted accordingly.
If you get promoted to reviewer, you can review transcripts submitted by other certified transcribers and grade them.
After that, you can be promoted to a self-reviewer once 10 review submissions have been verified and your average grade is above 3. This will effectively double your rate of payment.
If your average grade falls below 2.5, you will not be able to select any files, but your account will remain active and you can still accrue referral and affiliate commissions if any.
From there you can go on to become a proofreader. These files are generally longer and the payment depends on the duration, accents, and difficulty level.
Pros and Cons
Pros:
- free to join.
- no limit or set amount of work you need to complete.
- affiliate program available.
- instant payments if you need them.
- Scribie is a legit company.
Cons:
- work isn’t always available for you to do.
- some of the accents are difficult to hear or understand.
- the pay to start off is better than most other sites of this nature, but you won’t get rich.
- you are trading time for money, just like working in most jobs.
Would I Recommend Joining Scribie?
Well yes and no. Scribie is legit and I joined, as it is useful to have some extra ways to earn instant cash in my spare time. The payment isn’t very high as a beginner transcriber but will get better as I move through the levels.
The main problem is of course time. I find it better to use most of my spare time to build out my own affiliate online business, so I will only transcribe when I need a break from this or during some quiet time over a weekend.
By having your own online business, you can build an income that comes in on autopilot, and not only when you submit work as you would on Scribie.
However, as Scribie does have an affiliate program, it is yet another great way for affiliate marketers to earn income on autopilot, so you actually have nothing to lose by joining this program.
And if you are still wondering ‘is Scribie legit?’ the answer here is a resounding yes.
I actually like the review here and thank you so much for supplying so much information here about Scribie. Honestly, I see this as a good platform that one can actually use to make good money by doing the simple work of transcribing. I like how transcribing works generally, and seeing that you have provided so much information here about them is awesome to see. Thumbs up to you and I am now waiting for them to send me my test.
This platform helps a lot if you need some instant cash, but remember it is always better to have your own online business that can eventually pay you 24/7 without you needing to swap time for payment.
I had heard several good comments about Scribie and a friend even sent me a tutorial on how to get prepared for an exam they do to those that want to become transcriber at their site. I like the idea of listening to podcasts and transcribing them. I think I have good skills for that. I also like that the earning potential is above survey sites.
The test is very difficult, but if you can get in there, the earning potential is quite good. I, however, would definitely rather recommend spending more time building your own business so you don’t end up swapping hours for pay your entire life.
My daughter is looking to supplement her income as a cosmetologist by working from home online in her spare time. How are the audio files given out to the transcribers? Is the work available on a first-come first-serve basis, or is it doled out by someone at Scribie? My sister-in-law used to work for a company that put all assignments online about 4am, and she’d have to be there at that time to get any substantial work. If she waited even a couple hours later, the only assignments available would be the lowest paid or the most difficult.
But if Scribie would have work for her during the hours she’s available, it would be an ideal way to earn extra money!
It works on a first come first serve basis, but so far there always seems to be audio files there to click on. Weekends I find there is not much, but weekdays better.
It’s worth a try to sign up and do the test, although it may take a few tries to pass, but then at least you know you can get some work when you need it.
This is the first time that I have come across Scribie. I do find it interesting that you say they are not accepting residents from California or the US, but yet the payouts are in dollars? Would you have any insight into this?
The payments seems to be very low and you mention of between 50 cents and $2, which I think is pathetic to say the least. And with a 5% affiliate commission, I do not think it is worth my while pursuing. But thank you for reviewing
That is strange that they pay in US Dollars but don’t accept certain States there unless their terms have changed since they published it on the site, as I know two people in the States who are working for them.
